Its important to realise that when you watch any film or video be it a wedding video or even a blockbuster movie, your mind subconciously decodes the semiotic content within that piece of media, it simply cant help but do. This is due to years of programming by film and video makers which have brain washed our mass society into translating images based on their colour, position within frame, movement, angle and a whole host of other variables not to mention sound and lighting.
This type of manipulation means that you cant help but feel a certain way when you watch a film thats has been constructed with these considerations in mind. Examples of this can be seen in horror films building up anticipation or action films creating that edge of your seat feeling. The same rules and conventions affect you wedding video and its important that any professional wedding videographer understands these concepts in order to creat a powerful representation of your wedding day.
I have on many occasions been contacted by brides who have had their wedding video produced by someone else, saying that they want a re-edit or 'can I do anything with it'. Commonly the fault lies not only in the editing but also in the recording of such material and poorly frame, badly exposed footage is always going to convey a negative message. Often couples will state that they want it changing but dont know quite where or how, this re-enforces the use of semiotics in wedding videography, prooving that couples are getting a negative subliminal message from their wedding video.
Following such consultations I often find that they have spent years planning their big day and in the build up have decided to have it filmed, having spent a large portion of the budget on the venue, flowers, catering, photography, magician etc etc they decide to go with a budget videographer as all they want is record of the day. How wrong could they be. The result is often poor sound, poor framing, shaky camera movement and we all know what that implies!
I cant say this enough but blow the budget on a good professional wedding videographer! They will be recording everything you have spent your hard earned money on and I can catagorically state if you choose wisely they will be worth every penny. I have often had people tell me I was expensive, this doesnt bother me as I dont want to be a cheap wedding videographer. I would much rather give value for money.
Running a professional business is expensive, when you consider all the costs involved including equipment, insurance, media stock, education, yes education In order to remain at the top of your field its important to continually learn new techniques and maintain a high standard, you can only do this by educating yourself and your staff.
